The Rest of the Story

I mentioned yesterday about what a wonderful greens for eating are...dandelion greens. I added they were not as tasty without a bit of bacon dressing. Well we lived in a compound in Saudi and there were quite a few military people mixed in with the civilians. The military had access to a commissary with all the goodies they have to sells i.e. pork and alcohol. Thrifty military wives saved up their bacon grease and sold it at a nice profit to some of the civilian wives. Ha, you never thought bacon grease was a black market item.

  1. Since I'm a vegetarian, I enjoy all my greens without ANY bacon grease. But long ago, I wasn't one. I don't remember bacon grease EVER being contraband, though, when I was a military wife! :-)

  3. I wouldn't want to do without my bacon. And bacon and greens are made for each other although it's been many years since I've had any dandelion greens or poke sallet.

  4. Years ago at my son's first birthday party we were sitting outside. My dear wonderful grandma looked at my grass (in the country) and said, "Honey, you've got a salad there with dandelion and polk (or poke) greens." She went on to point out others. My mom took me aside later and said, "Teresa, don't eat what she pointed out, she can't see well anymore." :)

    A great memory.
